Why quantity should be your priority

  • The key to higher quality is higher quantity
I was recently reminded of a simple general principle to operate by.

"Quantity trumps Quality"

Quantity should be a higher priority because it leads to higher quality the shorter path to maximized quality is maximized quantity and executing on the feedback given from the finished product.

I read this in "art and fear" by David Bayles and ted Orland

"The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups

All those on the left side of the studio he said would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced. all those on the right solely on the quality.

His procedure was simple, on the final day of class he would bring his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the quantity group 50 pounds of pots rated "A" 40 pounds "B" and so on.

Those being graded on quality however only needed to produce one pot, albeit a perfect one to get an A

Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged. The works of highest quality were all produced by the group graded on quantity.

It seems that while the quantity group was busily churning out piles of work and learning from their mistakes. The quality group had sat theorizing about perfection and had little to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay.

Dont get stuck trying to get it right the first time instead do two things every day.

Learn from feedback the internet is great for advice and exposure to better work.
